Catherine Lane is a respected artist and arts educator who lives and works in northern NSW. Lane’s expressive functional work pivots on the landscape and flora and fauna of Bundjalung country and pursues elegance in form and function. Residencies at Hill End and the Gaya Ceramic Centre in Bali where she returned (2018) as the interim Director, to co-ordinate the international artist program and teach, have punctuated a career that spans forty years.
Each collaborative interaction with either Moira Finucane or Linelle Stepto offers different stimulating opportunities to cultivate new skills and expand and explore alternative media. Lane’s bespoke porcelain keepsakes for Finucane and Smith have been gifted in Australia, China, Berlin and Cuba.
Lane is increasingly focussed on mixed media interactive installations which explore the expanding disconnect between humans and nature and which serve to highlight the extinction crisis. These invite a stillness that belies the urgency of the message and have been exhibited and embraced at events including the East Asian Australasian Flyways MOP in Brisbane and the Byron Writer’s Festival.
Her work is held in collections nationally and internationally.
